Well, theres a better option, because what ifjust what ifa crook works for the post office or newspaper company and keeps track of all of these vacation holds? Theyll know for sure youre gone and will rob you, or at least try to. Have a trusted adult retrieve your mail and newspaper.
Next up for protecting your possessions is a rule that cannot be said too often: Never post your travel plans on social media! The number of people who do this daily is alarming, and this includes posting while on the vacation as well, putting up photos of the beach and boasting about the weather, scenery, etc. A thief reading this is like a dog watching you put steak in his bowl.
Another tactic is to install timed lighting devices so that your house isnt perpetually dark, or perpetually lit up, which looks almost as suspicious.
Are you still continuing to put off getting a home security system? For as little as about $10/month your home can be monitored, but more provisional systems are still reasonable at $30 a month. The system should alert law enforcement if someone breaks in. Complement the home security with video surveillance. Todays systems allow you to access them remotely.
Additional Tips for Home Security While Youre Away
Lock up all your valuables in a safe.Deactivate the garage door opener.Set up automatic timers that turn lights on and off.Inform the police and a trusted neighbor of your travel plans.Record a message on your voice mail that implies youre home but busy.Ask a neighbor to park their car in your driveway.Have your grass cut to prevent overgrowth while youre gone.Make sure your car, if youre using it to travel, is equipped for the long trip.Load up the car under the cover of night or inside your garage so that nobody sees youre prepping to be gone.
What do you do when your family outgrows your house, or when the quirks of the place you once found charming aren't so charming anymore?
Is it smarter to move or improve? Here's some advice to help you decide.
Selling Has Gotten Easier
Existing-home sales were at their highest levels since 2006, and the median home price hit $197,100 at the end of 2013.
Right now, it's taking just over two months, on average, for homes to sell. If you've been holding back on selling, waiting for the real estate market to recover, you may find it's recovered in your area.
As you prepare your home for sale, consider what homebuyers want right now. Hint: energy efficiency. Demonstrating that your home is weather-sealed is a great selling point.
Also, if you're only up for a minimum amount of work, focus on curb appeal (which REALTORS say is critical to attracting buyer attention), your kitchen (even tweaks can make a big difference), and pricing your home right. The offers will come.
Take a look at homes for sale in your market to get an idea of what you can get for your money today. Ask your REALTOR to send you current listings from your target neighborhood.
Improving Has Gotten Pricier
During the economic slump, home improvement spending slowed, so contractors were willing to cut deals to stay busy. Today, they're less willing to bargain on price and too busy to accept low-profit jobs.
In addition, the cost of construction materials may be going up. In a recent National Association of Home Builders survey:
81% of contractors were concerned about rising materials prices 65% were concerned about rising labor costs
As a general rule, improving your home costs less than trading up. But it depends on what kind of improvements you want to do.
Figure paying somewhere between $100 and $200 a square foot for new construction or a major remodel, depending on the scope of the project and labor costs in your area. For instance, a two-story addition with a family room, bedroom, and bathroom costs a national average of $155,365, according to "Remodeling" magazine's "2014 Cost vs. Value Report."
Now more than ever you need to make sure that you invest your money wisely. In other words, will your $75,000 kitchen remodel increase your home value by $75,000 -- or by anything close? Not likely. But at resale you may be able to recoup some of your remodeling costs. For guidelines, check out the Cost vs. Value Report, which gives the national average annual cost and payback figures for 35 popular remodeling projects.

To assess what's right for your particular house, let your neighborhood be your guide. If there's any chance you'll move within the next 10 years, keep your improvements in line with those of other houses on your block, or risk losing the money when you sell. Of course, don't discount your enjoyment factor. If it'll make you happy to install an in-ground pool in a neighborhood without pools, go for it.
Your house isn't just your largest investment, of course, it's also the place where your family lives. Financial considerations aside, the question of whether to move or improve should be decided by the things you can't change about your current home:
School district The amount of traffic on your street Size and layout of your yard Commute time Access to markets and malls Neighborhood quality of life
If you love the spot, improving makes sense. But if a different location would be an improvement in its own right, then trading up could be the way to go.

Consumers spend an average of $13 billion on home security each year, according to Fierce Cable. Amazon.com, Best Buy, Home Depot, and Verizon Wireless will all sell the system and State Farm is giving Canary a seal of approval by offering owners of the security device up to seven percent discounts on their homeowners or renters insurance.
Canary Co-founder and CEO Adam Sager credits the companys quick acceptance by retailers to the fact that it solves a problem for an underserved market inexpensive home security for apartments and single-family homes.
Its what people have been asking for, retailers tell us that, Sager explained, adding, Were building in the direction the markets going.
The retailers sought out products that were simple, that anyone can install and doesnt overcomplicate the home. The problem with the word smart, often products that call themselves smart may complicate your experience; they may not have intelligence.
Canary has been flying high since its record-breaking Indiegogo launch in 2013. It raised a then-record $2 million by selling more than 16,000 units to homes in 78 countries.
Maia Hinkle, research analyst for Parks Associates, says its important to build on that momentum. These types of campaigns are successful when consumers believe that the product or service is both novel and delivers value. The high ratings in the app stores indicate that Canary is delivering on its promise.
Hinkle added, By (Canary) positioning itself in retail, consumers will have the opportunity to visit 2,500 locations and test the product for themselves. After evaluating the product in-person, the consumer can buy with confidence.
Canary in a coalmine
These opportunities have come quickly for a company that Sager and two friends founded in New Yorks SoHo neighborhood three years ago. The triumvirate has grown into a 70-person staff thats growing rapidly.
Sager says all of the hardware, software, and design is done in-house. Manufacturing is done overseas, but its handled by Canary staff that the CEO says has been hired away from Apple, Motorola, and other household-name tech firms.
Most users dont think about how a device is made, said Sager, but its a source of pride for us because we know how much time and effort went into it and what it will produce.
And yes, the system is named after the rudimentary alarm system employed by miners who took canaries into coalmines to monitor for gas leaks.
Hopefully, ours is a friendly system in your home to warn you that things are going wrong, Sager said when discussing the nomenclatures backstory.
And while a number of companies are creating smart security devices with interactive cameras, Canary officials claim its product is more comprehensive than rival offerings.
It learns your habits and behaviors and sends meaningful alerts, asserted Sager.
The system is always on, purportedly cuts down on false alarms with its artificial intelligence, and in privacy mode the camera is turned off. Data is not stored locally; its accessed in the cloud via app. A service to save videos will be launched for customers who want to record moments from home while theyre away.
The sleek Canary unit is about the size of an external hard drive at six inches tall and. three inches wide. Its made to sit on a shelf or end table where its motion detection and night vision sensors can pick up activity and the camera can live stream HD video and audio to your smartphone. If you have multiple Canaries, they work in harmony.
The system uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet to connect to the Internet and works on recent iOS and Android smart devices. It not only reacts to unexpected motion, it monitors the temperature, humidity, and quality of the air in your home. A 90+ decibel alarm is built in and sounds if a user doesnt deactivate it when sent alerts.
The app can also alert police or fire departments if alerts are not designated false alarms.
Analyst Hinkle gives Canary praise for easy set up and great learning features, which use alerts and responses from the user to know whether its situation normal or the authorities need to be notified.
The steps are very easy, but it is very comforting knowing that I dont have to invest a lot of time into the product for it to benefit me and learn my preferences in the process, she said, adding, The images are clear and the notifications are extremely easy to access and address.
Canary would like to unseat incumbents such as ADT in homes, but the upstart security firm is also looking to service an underserved marketrental apartments.
It offers security to millions of people who never had access before, Sager explained, and that number is 39 million American renters by the companys count. The Canary CEO said cost plays a major factor in deterring people from getting a home security system.
With a $249 retail price, Sager says Canary is a cheaper and more beautiful option than the typical security setup.
Parks Associates Hinkle said theres plenty of room growth with just 17 percent of US households adopting home security. She added, The introduction of interactive services and home controls has expanded the value proposition and spurred growth.
However, the biggest hurdle for Canary may be awareness. Consumers are not familiar with smart devices or where to purchase them, explained Hinkle.
Brian Blau, research director, consumer technology and markets at Gartner says increasing competition from larger tech firms looms as a challenge. I worry (Canary) will have a tough time competing against not only all of the other home security startups, but also the big players like Samsung SmartThings.
Canary will need to stand out from the pack with price, significantly different features, or maybe they will get acquired and that will be how they eventually get to a higher level of success, he added.
Canary plans an international rollout later this year and the companys CEO is undaunted by Samsung or other startups. We developed the best product with the smartest software that uses artificial intelligence that understands your environment and sends you data you can act on. Its designed for everyone, to open this (home security) market up and connect people to their homes.
When designing rooms, everyone should consider the mood. Then use that mood to help you choose the proper colors and items for your room. A example of this would be creating a calm mood with soft and warm colors.
The color scheme is imperative when beginning a project on a room in your home. You should think about what looks good together and what will not so your room looks balanced. It also helps to avoid the over-use of bold color in a room.
The amount of natural light in a room or area plays a large role in most interior planning projects. If you are lacking in window area in your room, you should paint the walls a light and bright color.
Make sure you have the finances worked out before you begin an interior decorating project. Nothing is worse than starting a project that you can not finish because you ran out of money for it. This will help you to reduce stress and anxiety while designing.
It is very important that you hang the art work at the eye's level. If you hang the artwork too low or too high on the wall, it can make your room seem off-balanced and may even give the illusion that your room is smaller and poorly organized.
Appropriately sized area rugs can add color and drama to any room. Make sure you turn your rugs every now and again so they stay evenly worn. Moving or turning your rugs regularly will keep them looking new for longer.
Get a little crazy when you paint. There are a lot of tutorials that you could find online that you could use when it comes to interior design. Being creative with your wall paint designs can transform a room from dull to inspiring in very little time.
By getting rid of the clutter in any space or room, you would be surprised at how much bigger the area will feel. Try to get storage for things that are usually left out and create clutter. Boxes can be used to store toys, and a new filing cabinet may be in order if you have lots of paperwork. A box kept in the corner takes a great deal less place than having its contents scattered about.
Area rugs are great for any room. It is important, though, that the rug fits in the room properly. Make sure that the dimensions do not look odd in the room by getting the right sized rug. Coordinating your area rug with the size of your room is integral.
Simple is good for your walls if you have a lot of other objects in the room. Some people choose to keep more items than others. This is natural, but if you are a collector make sure your displays are tasteful and your walls are not over decorated. Too many decorations can be distracting.
Before starting a particular interior design project, you need to consider how long you will live in your house. If this home is not someplace you plan on living at for much longer, you should consider designing the home in a more neutral fashion. A design that seems awesome to you could discourage anyone considering purchasing your home if you need to sell.
Pedestal tubs are a beautiful accent point in a bathroom. They retain their appeal because of their classic beauty. Make use of a handheld shower, or a shower attached by pole, since these older tubs do not typically use a shower head. Check your local hardware store to see the possibilities.
If you've got a miniscule kitchen and want to freshen it up, try using light colors. Colors in an off-white or beige and furnishings in light colors will give the illusion that the room is bigger. On the opposite end of the spectrum, colors like dark blue and brown can make the room seem tiny.
Before selecting paint colors, carefully consider the room's sun exposure. Sunlight can play an important role in the look of a room's paint, and you should study different colors at different times of day before settling on a hue.
A great thing to remember when it comes to interior decorating is that consistency is key. When a major feature of a room is done in one style, something from a completely different era is sure to look amiss. Before you start decorating, decide on a theme for the space so everything will look good together.
If you have felt fear about interior decorating, you should learn some things here that will calm you. Once you have the necessary knowledge, it's easy to proceed. Just start using the great tips you have just learned, and soon your house will look amazing!
Sketch out a design before you dig your first hole on a landscaping project. This lets you visualize the space with the correct dimensions, thanks to your careful measurements, so you can estimate the materials needed and costs involved. It's much simpler to change your ideas on a drawing than it is to change what you've already done in your yard.
Changing the edging on your beds can dramatically alter the look of your landscaping. Curved beds are a lot more up-to-date as opposed to straight lines and sharp corners. Cutting the edges of your flower beds is cheap, but it can totally transform your flower bed's appearance.
Use native plants whenever you landscape. When you decide to landscape your garden be sure to use flowers, shrubs and trees that are native to your area. These plants do well in the soil you already have, don't need additional water or fertilizer and can handle the temperature swings your area experiences, all while thriving beautifully.
Select your plants carefully, as they have a big impact on your overall landscaping project. You'll want to avoid placing plants that need lots of sunlight in areas that are shady. Be conscious of how much water, light and room each plant needs. Take the time to consider the needs of your plants and plant them in a place that they'll thrive.
Many people don't think about online shopping regarding landscaping. Shopping online is faster and more convenient, and also provides you access to unusual plants that may not be in stock at a local store.
Despite what you might have heard, you don't need to spend money on hiring a professional landscaper to achieve the landscaping effects you want. You will probably end up paying far more than necessary, especially if you are capable of doing the labor yourself. You may want to consult with a landscaper, though, to get some guidance on how to best approach your project.
Shop on the Internet for better deals and more variety. There are lots of quality websites that offer popular products at very reasonable prices. Make sure you check out customer reviews to see if you are getting products that are handled with care and come on time. Make sure you compare prices between websites.
When making plans to modify the landscaping, think about the existing items prior to doing anything. Make sure to know where cables, gutter, sprinklers and other systems are placed so you do not disturb them when you are doing your landscaping. Before digging, contact the county or city to ascertain that you don't cause any damage to underground lines.
To add lots of color and texture to your yard on a tight budget, try planting some wildflowers. Wildflower seeds are widely available and can be scattered liberally in large or difficult-to-plant areas. This strategy results in many different colors and types of beautiful flowers. They can make exceptional flowers for bouquets!
If you are doing landscaping on your own, sit down and first estimate out all the costs. Make a comprehensive list of all materials and supplies that will be necessary for the project. Next, determine where you should buy these materials. Prices can vary wildly based on where you make your purchases. Call around to find the best prices available in your area.
Speak with an experienced professional before beginning your project. Even if you landscape yourself, talk to a pro for more reassurance. If you don't know that much about landscaping, a professional can offer advice or help you prevent huge mistakes. Even if you're an experienced landscaper, a second opinion never hurt anyone.
To create a landscaping design that is visually appealing and easy to take care of, be sure to use native plants. Plants that have adapted to your region will be easier to take care of. You will also use less water and money on local plants, since they do not need as much irrigation as foreign plants.
Remember that the larger plants in your arrangement will cast shadows and that the smaller plants in shade. Use this natural shade as a benefit rather than a hindrance, and position the larger plants somewhere where they can protect your house or deck from the heat of the sun in the warmer months. Avoid placing smaller plants where they will be in this shadow.
As mentioned earlier, landscaping is an important part of the overall look of your home. It can be quite difficult to landscape your home properly; however, with good instructions and careful effort, you will succeed. Study this article's tips and you'll be a landscaping expert in no time.
